I love *insert music descriptor*…Which concerts should I pick?
A good question that we hear everyday in the Tafelmusic box office. Our answer, of course, is all of them.
However, for those of you looking for a curated set of concerts for your perfectly flexible subscription package, we’ve got answers.
If you like that, then you’ll love these…
If you love choral music…
Then you’ll love everything the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir is doing this season. From Choral Kaleidoscope featuring Choir Director Ivars Taurins’ favourite works from 17th- and 18th-century European choral music; to A Handel Celebration, a salute to the great composer; to holiday classic Handel Messiah; and finally the long-awaited return of our Sing-Along Messiah, there’s something for every choral lover.
(Please note: Handel Messiah and Sing-Along Messiah are only available as add-on concerts.)
If you love a good banger…
Then you’ll love our highly-anticipated blockbuster bangers hitting the stage this season. Hear Beethoven’s famous Symphony No. 5—and the “most famous four notes in the world”—in Beethoven 4 & 5. Experience the majesty of a full choir singing the famous Hallelujah chorus at Handel Messiah—or, join in on the fun yourself with Sing-Along Messiah. And experience the full glory of Handel in our epic season closer, A Handel Celebration, featuring our full Tafelmusik Chamber Choir.
(Please note: Handel Messiah and Sing-Along Messiah are only available as add-on concerts.)
If you love it when women lead the way…
Then you’ll love the renowned women guest directing our concerts this season. Spanish violinist and guest director Lina Tur Bonet makes her Tafelmusik debut with Fantasticus, exploring the “fantastic style” of the early 17th century. Tafelmusik favourite Aisslinn Nosky directs Passions Revealed, exploring the peaks and valleys of human emotion. Tafelmusik violinist Julia Wedman directs Staircases, a brand new multimedia program created by Alison Mackay. And in Bohemian Rhapsody, we welcome Bulgarian violinist Zefira Valova to the Tafelmusik stage, directing a program of music from 18th-century Bohemia.
If you love international virtuosos…
Then you’ll love the electric and virtuosic performances on full display this season. In Vive la différence we welcome French/Italian violinist Emmanuel Resche-Caserta, concertmaster of Les Arts Florissants and an artist whose “remarkable direction is coupled with superb violin playing, ease, and virtuosity” (ForumOpera). Known for his “mesmerizing” (Ludwig van Toronto) performances, Kristian Bezuidenhout returns as harpsichordist and guest director for Transformations.
Even more violin virtuosity will be on display with Lina Tur Bonet (Fantasticus), known for her “raw energy” and her “dazzling, robust, and edgy” performance style (Musicweb International); the “perpetually fabulous” (Boston Globe) Aisslinn Nosky (Passions Revealed); “extraordinarily intuitive” (Globe and Mail) Julia Wedman (Staircases); and Concertmaster of the high-octane period orchestra Il Pomo D’Oro Zefira Valova (Bohemian Rhapsody).
