STEPHEN VARCOE is one of Britain’s best known baritones in the field of Baroque music. He has made a large number of recordings, collaborating with Gardiner, Pinnock, Herreweghe, Christie, Kuijken and Malgoire on discs of Purcell, Handel, Rameau and Bach. On the concert platform, Stephen has appeared with orchestras in the UK, Europe, Japan and North America and regularly taken part in the BBC Proms, and festivals throughout the world. His Baroque operatic appearances include Peri’s Euridice in Drottningholm, Monteverdi's Orfeo in Tokyo, and Handel's Orlando in Glasgow. He has also performed in Jonathan Miller's staging of Bach's St Matthew Passion in London and New York.

Alongside his concert and recording work, Stephen gives lectures, masterclasses and seminars on various aspects of singing both in the UK and elsewhere. He teaches at the Royal College of Music in London, at Clare College, Cambridge, and at several Summer Schools. In 2009 he completed a PhD at the University of York on the performance of song.
