In Tafelmusik meets Tchaikovsky, we are premiering a new arrangement of Mendelssohn’s famous Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tafelmusik asked composer Carlo Citterio to write the arrangement in keeping with our season theme of Old meets New, and in order to offer a taste of Mendelssohn’s late work to contrast to the early symphonies that open the concert. Carlo is Elisa’s brother, and he has previously written cadenzas for concertos by Mozart and Beethoven performed by Elisa with Tafelmusik. He has also acted as advisor on elements of Elisa’s orchestral transcription of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which will be premiered in April, 2020. We are delighted to have Carlo as part of the extended Tafelmusik family.
Biography
Born in Brescia, Italy in 1966, Carlo Citterio started studying music at an early age, first on piano and then classical guitar. He went on to study composition at the Conservatorio di Musica L. Marenzio di Brescia (Italy) under the guidance of Luca Francesconi e Giancarlo Facchinetti, graduating in 1993. He later attended various specialized courses, including composition classes with Ivan Fedele (Scuola Civica di Musica di Milano) and Franco Donatoni (Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena), a course in electronic music with Riccardo Sinigaglia (Conservatorio di Musica di Milano), and a seminar on film music held by Ennio Morricone (Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena).
Carlo’s works include many chamber music compositions, which have been performed in various places in Italy and Europe (Milan, Paris, Edinburgh etc.) in collaboration with musicians from renowned orchestras and ensembles, among themLa Scala di Milano, Arena di Verona, Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, and Trio di Parma. Carlo collaborates regularly with his sister, Tafelmusik Music Director and violinist Elisa Citterio, for whom he composed, among other works, two concerto cadenzas performed in Toronto in 2018.
Since 2014, Carlo has been responsible for incidental music at the Teatro Scena Sintetica di Brescia (Italy).
