An introduction to Essential Bach by Music Director Elisa Citterio
For a musician, playing the music of Bach should not be optional: it is a necessity, and never more so than in these times of social distance and closed concert halls. We need deep music that touches the most intimate chords within us, leaving us with a feeling of well-being. I like to compare Bach's greatness to a centuries-old tree, whose trunk with hundreds of growth rings is an apt representation of the innumerable layers of his music. Bach’s works can be performed hundreds of times without ever becoming obvious, but rather always revealing new nuances. This program of intimate chamber sonatas thus becomes essential for those of us who play it, and for those who listen to it. The world would not be the same without Bach's music.
