An introduction to Close Encounters: Divertimento by program curator and violist Patrick G. Jordan
Divert (verb): To draw away from fatiguing or serious occupations; pleasurably to excite the mind or attract the attention; to entertain, amuse. [Oxford English Dictionary]
The thrill and delight of sharing chamber music is today largely a spectator event, but in the 18th century it was primarily a shared activity, generated by the participants as each in their way contributed to the music. Much as playing the music is a game of give and take, so too was the genesis of this program. Parts of it were preserved from a concert we were sadly obliged to cancel last May, and the rest was plucked from a sea of wonderful late 18th-century sources, with a great deal of negotiating to accommodate a shifting set of players, ensuring everyone a chance to shine!
