Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre

No one who attended Lina Tur Bonet’s Tafelmusik debut in 2024 could possibly forget her exuberant, gorgeous playing, and intense rapport with the orchestra.

The Spanish violinist’s lively, daring playing style is the perfect match for Vivaldi’s “Il Grosso Mogul,” a concerto she attacks with “an almost punk rigour that piques your curiosity” (South German Radio). In Tur Bonet’s hands, this work is as startlingly fresh, inventive, and virtuosic to our ears today as it was in 18th-century Venice.

The balance of our program makes way for members of the orchestra to shine in solo roles, and includes Zelenka’s Sinfonia Concertante in A Minor along with a piece of buried treasure—the Concerto à Quattro in C Minor by the Austrian baroque composer who wrote under the pseudonym Giovanni Henrico Albicastro.

The concert includes Geminiani’s spectacular orchestral arrangement of Corelli’s famous violin sonata “La Folia.” Featuring one of the most recognizable bass lines of the last 300 hundred years, the folia theme can be heard in everything from Bach’s “Peasant” cantata to Nicholas Britell’s soundtrack for the TV series Succession. Geminiani was not immune to folia fever and with Tur Bonet at the wheel, this high-voltage showpiece is guaranteed to bring the house down.
