A spirit of optimism infuses this concert of music by two masters, composed during an era of profound transformation.

While all of the music on this program is new to Tafelmusik, the cornerstone is the orchestra’s premiere performance of Symphony no. 39 in E-flat Major by Mozart—a clever, energetic work that is perfectly suited to the timbre and nimbleness of period instruments.

Known for her “silvery-smooth tone and sure-handed virtuosity” (Gramophone), violinist and guest director Leila Schayegh takes centre stage in the thrilling Violin Concerto in D Major by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges, while the “superb” flutist Marcello Gatti (Gramophone) is featured in Mozart’s lyrical Andante for flute and orchestra in C Major. The concert opens with Symphony in D Major, op. 22 by Andreas Romberg, a contemporary of Beethoven, whose music hints at changes just around the corner.

Leila Schayegh

Guest Director and violin soloist

Leila Schayegh belongs to the most visible violinists in the current baroque music scene.

Her vivacious interpretation has placed her at the center of old music. She performs all over the world as a soloist or in chamber music groups and is regularly invited by modern orchestras for concerts and masterclasses.

Leila Schayegh has developed a close collaboration with Jörg Halubek, cembalist, organist and director. Their 2016 recording of Bach’s six obligato sonatas was awarded numerous prizes (Diapason de l’année, Grammophone Award, Schallenplattpreis). Her collaboration with director and cembalist Vaclav Luks led to the recordings of Benda’s violin sonatas (Diapason d’Or 2011) and Mysliveček’s violin concertos in 2018. She’s been playing since 2008 with Gli Angéli Genève (directed by Stephan MacLeod), in particular for the almost complete series of Bach’s cantatas. She’s recently expended her repertoire towards the classical and romantic period, in particular with a recording of Brahms’s violin sonatas in 2018 with Jan Schultsz for the label Glossa. In 2020 she recorded Bach’s famous Sonatas and Partitas for the same label, and in 2022 the complete Leclair violin concertos with La Cetra Basel will be released.

Marcello Gatti

Flute soloist

Born in Perugia (Italy) in 1967, Marcello Gatti graduated at the Conservatory “F. Morlacchi” on modern flute in 1986. He completed his studies on baroque and classical flute with Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (NL) where he obtained the soloist diploma (with distinction) in 1997, and the chamber music diploma dedicated to the renaissance repertoire.

He has played many concerts all over Europe, America, Japan, Australia and Middle East, and he is invited to joint ensembles as:

Ensemble Aurora (Enrico Gatti), Accademia Bizantina (Ottavio Dantone), Zefiro (Alfredo Bernardini), Europa Galante (Fabio Biondi), Accademia Montis Regalis (Alessandro De Marchi), Cappella della Pietà de’ Turchini (Antonio Florio), Attaignant Consort (Kate Clark), Armonico Tributo Austria (Lorenz Duftschmidt), Cantus Cölln (Conrad Jungaenel), Le Concert de Nations (Jordi Savall), Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopmann), Piccolo Concerto Wien.
