More Bach Motets
January 25

Toronto, December 20, 2019… Tafelmusik rings in the New Year with two intriguing programs —Gone with the Winds (Jan 16–19, 2020) recreates the sonorities of the wind Harmonie, 18th-century wind ensembles that performed transcriptions of opera arias and music by Viennese masters. In keeping with the theme of Tafelmusik’s 2019/20 season, old meets new, the concert includes a world premiere by Canadian composer Cecilia Livingston, aptly titled Gone with the Winds. Later that month choir director Ivars Taurins and Tafelmusik Chamber Choir take a deep dive into the choral music of the Bach family with a special concert, More Bach Motets (January 25, 2020), also featuring Tafelmusik cellist Keiran Campbell performing movements from J.S. Bach’s Suites for solo cello. Both programs take place at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre.

Gone with the Winds, January 16 to 19

During the 18th century, hits from the latest operas were often arranged for wind octets that performed in private homes, spas, pubs, and public gardens. Known as Harmonie, these ensembles of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns played covers of popular opera arias, as well as original music by Viennese composers of the day.

Inspired by the Harmonie tradition, the program for Gone with the Winds includes Mozart’s Serenade in C Minor, Beethoven’s Sextet, op. 71, and arrangements of opera arias from Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Rossini’s Barber of Seville performed by John Abberger andMarco Cera, oboes; Tindaro Capuano andJean-François Norman clarinets; Dominic Teresi andClay Zeller-Townson, bassoons; and Todd Williams andDylon Pastoor, horns; along with Pippa Macmillan, double bass.

Borrowing its name from the concert title, Cecilia Livingston’s Gone with the Winds is a tongue-in-cheek play on the repeated note figures of Mozart's K.388 and Beethoven's op. 71, pushing those gestures into more recent minimalist musical worlds, while hinting at the famous “Tara's Theme” from Max Steiner's score for the film Gone with the Wind.

Bach’s family, including his great uncle Johann Bach, his cousin Johann Christoph Bach, and his father-in-law Johann Michael Bach.
