Tafelmusik performs LIVE for Canadian newcomers

As part of its growing commitment to contributing to community life in a meaningful way, Tafelmusik is pleased to partner with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto and COSTI Immigrant Services on three short free live concerts to bring the beauty of music from the past to Canadian newcomers.

The first event was held September 14, following strict government health and safety guidelines. Tafelmusik musicians Cristina Zacharias (violin), Brandon Chui (viola), and Keiran Campbell (violoncello) performed selections of works from the Italian masters Giardini and Boccherini to 20 refugees new to Canada. The invitation-only, 40-minute performance was presented free. The second and third concerts are planned for late October and November.

“The current pandemic has complicated the lives of many immigrants by imposing isolation on what is a difficult journey that already has its share of separation and loss,” said Mario Calla, Executive Director of COSTI Immigrant Services. “The welcome offered by Tafelmusik and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura provides a haven for newcomers where they can be uplifted by the power of music and by the shared experience. COSTI is grateful to Tafelmusik and the Istituto for their kind gift in helping newcomers feel welcome at a difficult time.”

“The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Tafelmusik and COSTI to welcome our invited guests to a special concert by members of the Tafelmusik orchestra.  It is a privilege for us to host this group of newcomers to Canada at the Istituto, fulfilling our mandate of promoting culture and its universal values and making it accessible to audiences beyond our base of followers,” commented Alessandro Ruggera, Director of the Istituto.

“As a leading Canadian and international performing arts organization, Tafelmusik understands its responsibility to bring as much comfort and joy to the citizens of Toronto, and to learn more about the role that our music can play in people’s lives. We are delighted to find that opportunity despite these challenging times,” said Carol Kehoe, Tafelmusik Executive Director.

ABOUT TAFELMUSIK

Led by Music Director Elisa Citterio and Executive Director Carol Kehoe, Tafelmusik is an orchestra, choir, and experience that celebrates beauty through music of the past.

Founded over 40 years ago on the pillars of passion, learning, and artistic excellence, Tafelmusik continues to bring new energy to baroque music and beyond. Historically informed performances of 17th- to 19th-century instrumental and choral music (led by Chamber Choir director Ivars Taurins) share the stage with vibrant, insightful multimedia programs, and bold new music written just for the group. Each piece is played on period instruments, underscored and illuminated by scholarship.

Through dynamic performances, international touring, award-winning recordings, and comprehensive education programs, Tafelmusik invites audiences to engage with beauty and experience the breadth of emotion music can inspire.

Tafelmusik wishes to thank the following for their generous support: Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.
