Toronto, March 30, 2019 … Tafelmusik's Music Director Emerita Jeanne Lamon returns to direct a program of music by classical composers Haydn, Mozart, and Kraus. Tafelmusik’s Scott Wevers is featured as horn soloist for these concerts, which take place in two venues: Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre from April 25 to 28; and George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts on April 30. “I am excited to be directing Tafelmusik again, and I love this program,” says Jeanne Lamon. “Hunting was a big part of 18th-century aristocratic life and the horn is inextricably linked with the hunt. In each of the symphonies we're performing there are four horn parts instead of the usual two. This program offers dramatic, passionate, and tuneful music, from the youthful Mozart to the mature ‘Papa’ Haydn.”
The Hunt continues Tafelmusik’s new cycle of Mozart concertos, with Scott Wevers as soloist in Mozart’s joyous Horn Concerto no. 4 in E-Flat Major. Four horns take centre stage in Mozart’s youthful Symphony no. 25, while Haydn’s spirited Symphony no. 73 in D Major, “The Hunt,” is named for the calls of the hunting horn in the final movement. The program includes the Symphony in C Minor by Joseph Martin Kraus, known as “the Swedish Mozart.”
Scott Wevers plays on a horn made by John Webb in England in 2000. Designed to allow the player to perform music in any tonality, it is modelled after an original horn by the Bohemian maker Franz Stohr that is housed at the Prague Museum.
