One Night Only
Toronto, May 2, 2019 … Haus Musikwraps up its third season of bending the rules of the traditional classical music experience with Fantasticus, Thursday May 23,8:30 PM at Burdock Music Hall. One of Canada's most sought-after jazz musicians, Colleen Allen, makes her Haus Musik debut playing saxophone and flute solos. Allen will also collaborate with musicians from Tafelmusik as they explore sonatas written in the extravagant and improvisation-friendly stylus fantasticus. Music by 17th-century composers Marini, Buonamente, Bertali, and Schmelzer will be performed on violins, dulcian, theorbo, and harpsichord.
The turn of the 17th-century was a watershed era in European history. Radical developments in technology, science, and finance ushered in a new era. Music also saw sweeping changes, namely the stylus fantasticus, with its abrupt transitions, passionate harmonies, and quirky dance rhythms.
The stylus fantasticus was born in Italy in the early decades of the 17th-century, thanks to composers like Dario Castello and Giovanni Batista Fontana, who wrote sonatas for small ensembles of two or more instruments. Traveling musicians such as Biagio Marini and Antonio Bertali carried the style across the Alps into Austria and Germany where it found fertile soil in the imaginations of native German-speaking composers like Johann Heinrich Schmeltzer and Johann Caspar Kerll.
Doors open at 7:30 pm with live music starting at 8:30 pm. Advance tickets are $20 and are available online at www.hausmusik.ca. Ticket holders receive a 10% discount on food at Burdock Brewery next door.
