Strategic Context:

Tafelmusik is entering an exciting phase of renewal, growing its audience, amplifying its digital presence, strengthening international touring and recording legacies, and elevating its education and training initiatives. The Director of Marketing & Communications plays a critical role in advancing these goals by aligning brand storytelling, community engagement, and audience development with Tafelmusik’s strategic direction.

The Director of Marketing & Communications is an experienced and dynamic leader who directs Tafelmusik’s marketing/communications plans and campaigns, expanding outreach, maximizing earned revenue and supporting audience engagement. The ideal candidate actively participates in the implementation of Tafelmusik’s multi-year strategic plan to raise national and international awareness of Tafelmusik; to attract new audiences; and to drive ambitious earned and contributed revenue goals ahead of the organization’s 50th Anniversary Season in 2028-29.

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Marketing & Communications works closely with Tafelmusik’s Artistic Co-Directors and senior staff, including Artistic Administration and Operations, Development, and Box Office. The incumbent oversees a team of six (6) staff: Associate Director of Marketing, Marketing Manager, Marketing Coordinator, Box Office Manager, Box Office Coordinator, and Patron Services & Events Manager.

The Director of Marketing & Communications directs all institutional, subscription, and single ticket marketing campaigns for Tafelmusik. In addition to leading the Marketing team’s strategic development and execution, this position ensures a consistent organizational brand across all departments in close consultation with the Artistic Co-Directors. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Organizational Leadership & Strategy 

  • Project subscription/single ticket revenue and marketing expenses for the season marketing budget 
  • Oversee and assess media for all subscription and single ticketing campaigns, including direct mail, email, digital, print, radio, transit and outdoor signage.
  • Expand digital and social media advertising, and establish e-marketing strategies
  • Work in close collaboration with the Artistic Co-Directors, ensuring strong alignment with artistic planning and vision.
  • Participate in long-range institutional planning as a senior staff member
  • With the Development team, align marketing and communications with fundraising strategies, including donor acquisition, campaign branding, sponsorship recognition, and stewardship materials.

Marketing Strategy 

  • Develop and implement all short- and long-term institutional marketing plans to drive audience/revenue growth and to support national/ international touring, recording, education, outreach, and partnerships
  • Maintain a centralized marketing plan for use within the marketing team, and for communication to the Artistic Co-Directors, Executive Director and senior staff
  • Establish annual subscription and single ticket sales goals; regularly monitor seating inventory in collaboration with the Box Office Manager, ensuring pricing and inventory alignment with sales and outreach goals
  • Distribute regular campaign sales reporting cross-departmentally to inform marketing/sales strategies 
  • Craft, execute, and build support for mainstage single ticket campaigns, including activity across all paid, owned, and earned media channels 
  • Regularly adjust the Tafelmusik campaign marketing mix to maximize reach and overall brand awareness, both for programming and organizationally 
  • Conduct regular audience research and segmentation analysis to assess audience engagement, to understand demographic profiles, to identify growth opportunities (i.e. younger/more diverse audiences), and to develop/implement appropriate audience development strategies
  • Ensure that Tafelmusik’s programming season reaches an audience representative and inclusive of the Toronto market.
  • Work with community stakeholders to shape campaigns that reflect Toronto’s cultural richness and broaden access to baroque music.
  • Consistently update owned digital channels with quality content that reflects current organizational activities, events, and other initiatives, collaborating with the Artistic Co-Directors on artistic content 
  • Establish strategic partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders for ongoing cross-promotional collaboration 

Team Leadership 

  • Lead, supervise, and continually participate in the professional development of the marketing & box office team as described above.
  • Manage out-of-house partner and vendor relationships, including: 
    • Graphic designer, for creation of key display advertising deliverables Public relations firm, in support of earned media goals 
    • Videographer/editor, for creation of campaign video content

Concerts and Events

  • With the Patron Services & Events Manager:
    • Oversee audience engagement and stewardship/cultivation activities including pre-concert chats, donor events, subscriber lectures, and donor academies in collaboration with the Development teamCollaborate/coordinate with venue contacts, including Trinity St. Paul’s Centre, The Royal Conservatory, Massey Hall, and other external venues, regarding shared communications and deliverables, space use, wayfinding, lobby activities, patron protocols, safety, etc.
    • Update and maintain policies and procedures pertaining to audience services, including the Patron Code of Conduct, Emergency Procedures, and Accessibility

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

The Director of Marketing & Communications is a strategic, collaborative, and creative leader

  • With at least five (5) years’ arts marketing experience (performing arts strongly preferred).
  • Areas of expertise include direct ticket sales, campaign management and managing direct reports and/or external vendors and consultants.
  • The incumbent brings a clear understanding of not-for-profit structure; an ability to build stakeholder relationships in support of and advocacy for marketing initiatives; and a particular strength in engaging and collaborating with artists to underpin their work.
  • Excellent writing/communication skills are required, and design experience is a definite asset. 
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, web-based applications, and databases.
  • Appreciation of classical music is highly valued.

Remuneration and benefits

Salary range $90,000-$100,000 commensurate with experience.
