In keeping with our 2019/20 Season theme of “old meets new” we are thrilled to share the work of some of Canada’s and the world’s most exciting contemporary artists as part of our season campaign.
These stunning images were chosen to complement both the season theme and the theme of each individual concert. Here is a bit about the featured artists, along with links to their websites if you’d like to learn more.
Tafelmusik meets Tchaikovsky:
Orange Dawn, Dave Sandford
Dave Sandford is a professional photographer based in London, Ontario, Canada. He’s primarily covered professional sports for the past 21 years, but his passion for photography was born from a love of nature and wildlife. He has been fortunate to photograph far beyond Canada’s borders from the frozen tundra of the Arctic to the warm waters of the South Pacific capturing diverse wildlife and landscapes. Over the past 3 years, his nature photography has taken him into the frigid waters of Lake Erie where he tackled the challenge of “the Gales of November” as well as a world away to the surf breaks off the southeast coast of Australia and the polar ice caps of the Arctic.
Baroque Roots:
Junipero’s Garden, Steve Solinsky
Steve Solinsky was born in Berkeley, California. As an artist he brings his awareness to what he sees —light and pattern, color, and the symbols in form. His images capture these elements in a single transcendent moment—the "here and now" of the senses and emotions. Each image is a meditation on a fleeting impression caught in passing. The ordinary world is transformed from the particular into the archetypal. With him we pass through a portal from our familiar world, opening to the mystical, the surreal, and the mysterious. We are invited to savor each subject deeply and to feel its sublime pull.
Lotti Revealed:
Water Jewels, Clare Ross
Clare Ross is a Canadian artist known for the sensitivity in which she portrays the subtlest of details. Her work has been reviewed in publications in Canada, France and England. In 2014, she was one of 12 artists juried into the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), the oldest and one of the most prestigious art societies in Canada, where she is now President.
O Come, Shepherds:
Flock, Krzystof Browko
Traveling across the world with his camera and stand, Browko aims to capture an interesting part of reality. Having to adjust for weather conditions and light makes it even more challenging for him. He lives in Opole although he comes from a completely different part of Poland. Photography is the passion which helps him not only to break from daily routine but also to stop and notice things that we sometimes miss in everyday life.
Gone with the Winds:
Contrails, Laura Millard
Laura Millard has been exhibited in artist-run, commercial and public galleries across Canada including the Glenbow Museum, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Art Gallery of Windsor, La Centrale, the Edmonton Art Gallery and the Kenderdine Gallery at the University of Saskatchewan, Where Where Exhibition Space, Beijing, China, Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto, Sookmyung Women’s University, Korea and St. Lawrence University Art Gallery, New York. An artist, writer and educator, Laura Millard is is currently an Associate Professor at OCAD University in Toronto.
Dreaming Jupiter:
Heirloom IV (Adore), Dina Torrans
Dina Torrans has been working as a multimedia artist in Toronto for over twenty-five years. Her award winning sculptures, paintings and photographs have been exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions and are included in private and public collections internationally. In addition to her artistic practice she is the Creative Director at ArtDesign.to. Previously, she spent over a decade working in the Sculpture and Printmaking Departments of Toronto's The Art Centre at Central Technical School as both Instructor and Technician.
The Indigo Project:
With Feet of Blue (Indigo Extraction, South India), Tim McLaughlin, Maiwa
Tim McLaughlin is a Canadian artist, writer and photographer. Presently he is active in the production of small batches of traditional hand-made inks. He also teaches ink makingand researches natural dye use. In partnership with Charlotte Kwon and Maiwa Handprints, Tim documents artisan communities and advocates for the importance and continuation of traditional craft and culture. This collaboration provides the moment to take both writing and photographic work into new areas and to work on larger projects. Recently, Charlotte and Tim worked together to produce Textiles of the Banjara: Cloth and Culture of a Wandering Tribe Thames and Hudson, 2016.
Bach St John Passion:
Kathryn Hosier, detail, Karolina Kuras
Karolina Kuras is a Toronto based ballet and portrait photographer, creator of The Company Project and photographer with the National Ballet of Canada. Over the years her passion for classical ballet and photography have joined together to become the main focus of her work.
Bach Goldberg Variations:
Nautilus Twirl, Elizabeth Hesp/Elizabeth Hesp Fine Art
Elizabeth Hesp is a Kingston-based self-taught fine art photographer with over twenty years photography experience. She transitioned from the sciences to the arts as a full-time visual artist in 2012. A recipient of two Ontario Arts Council grants and a self-published author, Hesp’s minimalist and conceptual style of photography is inspired by her mindfulness practice and the cross-cultural perspective of her Indian heritage and Canadian identity. Her unique photographic style is a fusion of both the East and the West and is based on her journeys, both within and from around the world. Hesp paints with her camera and light to convey a feeling more so then to convey an image. Your emotional connection to her visual perspectives is the art she strives to create each time she presses the shutter button.
A Handel Celebration:
Peaches and Hydrangeas, After G.G., Paulette Tavormina
Paulette Tavormina lives and works in New York City. Amidst the bustle that defines the city, she can often be found at one of the city’s many farmers markets searching for the perfectly imperfect flora that characterize her photographs. Her arrangements often recall the sumptuous detail of seventeenth century Old Master still life painters and serve as intensely personal interpretations of timeless, universal stories. With a painterly perspective reminiscent of Francisco de Zurbarán, Adriaen Coorte and Giovanna Garzoni, Tavormina creates worldly still lives. She has been commissioned by National Geographic Magazine and The New York Times among others. Previously, Tavormina was a prop and food stylist in Hollywood, her work seen on the silver screen in seven films such as Nixon, The Astronaut's Wife and The Perfect Storm.
