The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute is led by some of the world's finest musicians in the field of baroque performance. The Institute is held at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. This comprehensive training program includes orchestra and choir rehearsals, masterclasses, opera scene study for singers, chamber ensembles, private lessons, lectures and workshops, classes in baroque dance, and concerts by both participants and faculty. We invite advanced students, pre-professional and professional musicians to apply.
The ninth annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute was held June 7 – 19, 2010. Faculty and staff welcomed 90 participants from around the world: 19 singers, 6 flutists, 4 oboists, 6 bassoonists, 12 violinists, 9 violists, 2 viola d’amorists, 5 cellists, 5 bassists, 8 harpsichordists, 2 lutenists, 16 conductors, and 4 continuo assistants. The faculty, led by orchestra and choir directors Jeanne Lamon and Ivars Taurins, included the members of the Tafelmusik Orchestra and vocal teachers Ann Monoyios, Rufus Müller and David Fallis. Opera Atelier co-directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg led opera and dance workshops, and instrument makers Robert Hicks (harpsichord), Thomas Linken (organ), Boaz Berney (flute), and Stephen Marvin and Trevor Ewert (bows) offered lectures and classes.
TBSI Artistic Coordinator Charlotte Nediger and a hard-working administrative staff oversaw an extremely busy and varied schedule. The long hours of hard work were rewarded with musical discoveries, warm friendships, and glorious music-making. Highlights of the Institute included the concert by the TBSI orchestras and choirs; an inspired reading of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion; a veritable banquet of musical offerings at an in-house concert by the student chamber ensembles; and “The Grand Finale,” a concert at Grace Church on-the-Hill in which the participants joined forces with the Tafelmusik Orchestra and Choir – some 120 performers in all, directed by Music Director Jeanne Lamon and Choir Director Ivars Taurins.
Tafelmusik is dedicated to developing the period performers of the future, and TBSI is producing great results: several past participants of the Institute have won positions in the Tafelmusik Orchestra and Chamber Choir and others have been hired on an occasional basis.
Over the past nine years we have welcomed several hundred musicians to delve into the world of baroque music with us. Plans are now under way for the tenth annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, to be held June 2-15, 2011. Watch for details here – and consider joining us!
