In the 2008|2009 academic year, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto will offer a Master of Music Performance (Instrumental) in conjunction with Tafelmusik, its Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence. This two-year graduate program is an intensive immersion in baroque performance on period instruments. The program includes private lessons and chamber music ensemble coaching with Tafelmusik musicians, two recitals, seven full-course requirements through the University of Toronto’s Graduate Department of Music, and an opportunity for students to perform in concert with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Students in this program are also encouraged to attend Tafelmusik rehearsals and concerts.
Nine full-course requirements or equivalent are required, including: MUS 4444Y and MUS 44445Y (applied lessons), MUS 6666Y Recital I and MUS 8888Y Recital II, one fullcourse in music literature (MUS 4200Y) normally taken in the first year of the program, two half-courses selected from: MUS 4600H Performance Practices Before 1800; MUS 4606H Special Topics in Performance Practice; MUS 4610H Analysis and Performance: Music of the 18th & 19th Centuries; MUS 4615H Analysis & Performance Practices of Twentieth-Century Music, and one full-course equivalent chosen from a specified list approved by the Department. Recitals may include a chamber music component with the approval of the Department.
Applicants for the Master of Music Performance (Instrumental) must hold the Bachelor of Music degree in the area of specialization (or the modern equivalent) from the University of Toronto with an average standing of mid-B or better over the final two years, or an equivalent program and standing from another university. Applicants whose undergraduate degree does not meet this standard may be required to take appropriate prerequisite courses.

All applicants must participate in an audition/interview. Those within 400 km/250 miles of Toronto will audition in person. Others may send in a recording. The complete audition requirements must be followed and be of good tonal quality. Recorded auditions of inadequate quality will not be considered.
All repertoire must be performed at a level equivalent to a graduate program Master’s Degree audition and must be played on period instruments. All audition programs must be submitted for approval to the Graduate Department of Music. A full-length audition program of at least sixty minutes in length of professional-level repertoire must be prepared and should demonstrate ability in repertory from the baroque period. All works must be complete. Where there is major sonata repertoire, a complete sonata must be included. Multi-movement works (e.g. suites) must be complete. Jurors will select repertoire from the candidate’s approved program equaling 30 minutes in length.
