Tafelmusik's 25th Anniversary
Looking Back

1978-1979

- Kenneth Solway and Susan Graves establish The Toronto Chamber Music Collective and present A Spring Festival of Baroque Music, featuring a concert of orchestral music of J.S. Bach performed by The Festival Baroque Orchestra (later renamed Tafelmusik)

1979-1980

- April 17, 1980 marks the first concert with Jeanne Lamon as guest director in a programme of works by Handel, Bach, Purcell and Telemann

1980-1981

- Kenneth Solway finds a permanent home for Tafelmusik at Trinity-St. Paul's Church in downtown Toronto (where we still perform 23 years later!)
- first annual performance of Messiah with St. Thomas' Singers

1981-1982

- Jeanne Lamon assumes position of Music Director
- Tafelmusik Chamber Choir founded
- Ottie Lockey appointed General Manager
- orchestra launches their first tour of North America

1982-1983

- two-concert mini-series at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art

1983-1984

- first performance of a Bach Passion (St. John)

1984-1985

- first European tour includes Lisbon, Madeira, Holland and Germany

1985-1986

- annual Canadian tour includes a week at Vancouver's Expo '86
- first collaboration with Opera Atelier at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, the start of a beautiful friendship

1986-1987

- Sing-Along Messiah performed at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church
- first tour of Central and South America

1987-1988

- Messiah moves to Toronto's historic Massey Hall
- awarded "Ensemble of the Year" by the Canadian Music Council
- signing of BMG contract which results in 4 CDs

1988-1989

- orchestra's 10th anniversary gala at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall

1989-1990

- first Juno Award for Boccherini's Symphonies and Cello Concertos
- signing of Sony contract which results in more than 40 CDs

1990-1991

- Mozart Gala at Roy Thomson Hall with Bruno Weil and Emma Kirkby
- first tour of Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan
- choir awarded the Healey Willan Prize "in recognition of its unique contribution to choral art in Canada"

1991-1992

- Sing-Along Messiah moves to Massey Hall
- first appearance at the Proms - Royal Albert Hall, London, England

1992-1993

- concert at Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
- second Juno Award for Handel's Floridante

1993-1994

- first residency at Klang und Raum Festival in Irsee, Bavaria
- honourary doctorate awarded to Jeanne Lamon by Toronto's York University
- third Juno Award for Handel's Concerti Grossi

1994-1995

- Toronto presentation of Haydn's Creation is the largest production to date
- fourth Juno Award for Bach's Brandenburg Concertos

1995-1996

- first performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion
- Echo Klassik Award for Best Orchestra of the Year by German Phonographic Academy
- Lieutenant Governor's Award for the Arts, for excellence in developing both private sector and community support
- Cannes Classical Music Award for Haydn's Paris Symphonies
- Handel's Water Music goes to number 9 on the US Billboard charts

1996-1997

- Education Programme for middle and high school students launched
- first appearance at the Tanglewood Music Festival
- Jeanne Lamon receives the prestigious Muriel Sherrin Award for international success in music

1997-1998

- Jeanne Lamon receives the M. Joan Chalmers National Award for Artistic Direction
- Tafelmusik completes its 15th European tour: 16 concerts in 8 countries

1998-1999

- Canadian astronaut and former member of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir Julie Payette brings Tafelmusik's "Messiah Choruses" CD to space on a shuttle mission to the International Space Station
- Jeanne Lamon awarded Canada Council for the Arts' prestigious Molson Prize
- Tafelmusik wins a 2nd Lieutenant Governor's Award for the Arts
- first tour to People's Republic of China

1999-2000

- Managing Director Ottie Lockey retires after 19 years of accomplished service.

2000-2001

- Tafelmusik welcomes current Managing Director, Tricia Baldwin.
- Tafelmusik establishes its vision be a centre of musical excellence for many generations to come and creates two new programmes to develop period performance musicians and audiences for the future: the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Insitute for pre-professional and professional musicians; and expanded education and outreach initiatives
- Jeanne Lamon appointed a member of the Order of Canada
- first Family Matinee presentation

2001-2002

- first annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute

2002-2003

- Tafelmusik wins a third Lieutenant Governor's Award for the Arts
- launch of Baroque Learning Centre online (www.tafelmusik.org/learningcentre)
- 10th anniversary as orchestra-in-residence at the Klang und Raum Festival, Irsee, Germany
- Bach Orchestral Suites (Analekta) awarded Diapason D'Or award
- A Baroque Feast (Analekta) nominated for 2003 Juno Award
- Le Mozart Noir international television documentary wins a Banff Rockie Award at the Banff Television Festival, and is nominated for a 2003 Gemini Award
