
Did You Know...?
- “Tafelmusik” is a German word that means “table music” or “music for the feast.” It was a common title for collections of music in the baroque period, and we adopted it as our name in 1979.
- Tafelmusik is the Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music.
- In 2008/2009, Tafelmusik celebrated our 30th Anniversary Season.
- Tafelmusik is proud to be one of Canada's foremost music ambassadors: over the past 30 years, Tafelmusik has performed in over 325 cities in 30 countries around the world from the U.S. and Mexico to Germany, Israel and China. “No other Canadian orchestra... does so much to give Canada a profile in the international arena of music.” - The Toronto Star
- Tafelmusik made our debut at Carnegie Hall debut in the 2008/2009 season.
- In 2000, Music Director Jeanne Lamon was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, and in 2004 was named Musician of the Year by the Toronto Musicians’ Association.
- In 2006, we were awarded our 8th and 9th JUNO Awards for Baroque Adventure: The Quest for Arundo Donax and Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6.
- In the 2007/2008 season we released our 75th and 76th CDs: Vivaldi L’estro armonico with Elizabeth Wallfisch (Analekta), and Gloria in Excelsis Deo (CBC Records), a musical celebration of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir’s 25th Anniversary. You can purchase these and other Tafelmusik recordings at the merchandise table after the concert.
- The UK’s prestigious Gramophone Magazine picked Tafelmusik’s recording of Vivaldi L’estro armonico as “Editor’s Choice” in their February 2008 edition.
- Tafelmusik’s most recent recording, Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8, conducted by Bruno Weil, was released in November 2008 on the Analekta label.
- Graduate students at U of T’s Faculty of Music can pursue a Master of Music in Performance (Instrumental) Degree on period instruments or a one-year Advanced Certificate Programme in baroque performance on period instruments with Tafelmusik.
